Three tiers of government

The 3 levels of government in Australia are:

  1. Local government (in the case of the Gold Coast, it's Gold Coast City Council - GCCC), responsible for rubbish collection and recycling, parks, sports fields and swimming pools, pet and pest control, town planning, local roads, and parking.
  2. State government (operating in Government House, Brisbane), responsible for schools, hospitals & ambulances, police, state roads, housing, prisons, public transport, and state taxes.
  3. Federal government (operating in Parliament House, Canberra), responsible for Medicare, the postal system, telephones and the internet, money, immigration & foreign policy, defence, and federal taxes.
